A high-altitude Spiti trip needs careful route checks, a gradual pace and a plan that can adapt to conditions.

Choose the route after checking access

Spiti is a high-altitude region and route access can vary by season, weather and road conditions. Check current official road information before deciding your direction or departure date.

Avoid relying on an old itinerary for road status. Build extra time into the journey and keep accommodation plans flexible where possible.

Give your body time to adjust

Plan a gradual ascent and avoid overloading the first days with strenuous activity. High altitude affects people differently; learn the symptoms of altitude illness and seek medical help if you feel unwell.

If you have health conditions or concerns about altitude, speak with a qualified medical professional before travel. Do not continue higher when you feel seriously unwell.

Pack for limited services

Carry warm layers, essential medication, basic supplies, offline maps and a way to keep devices charged. Services and connectivity can be limited outside larger settlements.

Respect local customs and fragile landscapes. Travel with a responsible operator if you are unfamiliar with remote mountain roads, and follow local advice throughout the trip.
